Abstract Tile
ARTIST STATEMENT:
1.) This piece utilizes many different shapes and forms to achieve its very distinctive look. There is a basic point of origin for most of the sections f different patterns, and textures. There was the use of coil building, and molding to create certain areas of the tile such as the the spheres, and the coils that are blended into the middle. The main channels were molded by my hands.
2.) The main element(s) of this tile are space, texture, and shape. This is because each of these plays an important role in separating the sections of the tile, while simultaneously making it cohesive. As you move your eye down the tile from top (Spheres) to bottom (Shapes) you can see it gets progressively more geometric while still maintaining some organic form.
3.) As I made this tile, I was mainly thinking about the beach and the ocean, and how the beach had lots of objects on its surface whether they be natural or man made, and I tied it into the flow look of the ocean. I drew this idea from my trip to Hawaii, and how much I loved sitting on the beach and just watching everything happen.
4.)I like this piece, but I believe there is room for improvement. Some of the shapes are a bit rough and could do with better shaping, and the piece does not have an outspoken focal point which I don't like, so I would try and find a focal point in the piece and emphasize it. Otherwise, I like the flow the piece has and I enjoy the amount of detail that I put into the piece, because no matter what way you turn it, there is always a new facet to explore.
