Clay Vessel
ARTIST STATEMENT:
1.) This vessel is a very organic shape, as it took the shape of the molds places under it. it has many different depth levels, and folds that contribute to its overall shape. The texture used gives it a rugged look, like it has been used. Each of the scratches points toward a different outlet of the vessel, so while it may look disorganized, it has a lot of direction.
2.) The main elements of this vessel were form and texture. For the texture piece, I was inspired by the artist Alana Wilson, as she uses texture in many of her pieces to further their meaning, and attractiveness. In terms of form, this vessel is meant to cary small items, but is mainly a decoration piece as it cannot hold much.
3.) I am very interested in the flow of water, and how, when left to its own devices, it can shape thing. With this vessel, I allowed the water in the clay to shape the vessel over the molds, this gave it an unpredictable shape, and a very organic one at that. This vessel will actually go in my room, because I enjoy decorations that allow the room to seamlessly allow your eye to move.
4.) I enjoy this vessel very much because it satisfies my need for freedom in rules. Molding the clay was a bit hard because it did not always fold so quickly, and I had to add a bit of water to help it along. Otherwise I think the piece is successful in conveying the water flow and the motions of organic materials.
